There Goes Dorothy

there goes dorothy
she’s been at the fair too long
she looks like a hippy

whew it’s hot––doozer weekend
mixed dried beans for a dollar
the nonchalance of the dappled crowd

the bandstand’s steady throb:
play us another lovesong
turn it up loud

everyone will now join in
says the bowlegged gandy-drummer
ta – te – ta
the sound of two sticks clacking

they shake the caxixi
the djembe, the clacking sticks
the shaking accelerates
to an approximate consensus

over the delta line to be with friends,
to gnaw on a tangy porkchop

stoker coal––lump and nut,
company housing
hollihocks cornfields cattails
U-pick apricots
